Mendocino Lake Ace supports programs for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities. This includes UVAH’s Mayacama Industries and Mendocino College’s academics for adult learners with disabilities. There are multiple agencies throughout the Mendocino Lake region that support this population as well. This site is intended to be a resource guide for parents, family members, agencies, and other people who support the adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities population.

Redwood Coast Regional Center: Mendocino County

This agency exists for two reasons – to prevent and/or lessen the effects of intellectual and other developmental disabilities; and to provide a wide array of supportive services to people who have intellectual/developmental disabilities, individuals at risk for disabilities, and their families.

Whom they Support: To be eligible for services, a person must have a disability that begins before the person’s 18th birthday, be expected to continue indefinitely and present a substantial disability as defined in Section 4512 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code. Eligibility is established through diagnosis and assessment performed by regional centers.

MCOE – Workability & Transition Partnership Programs

The Mendocino County Workability and Transition Partnership Programs (TPP) build and strengthen partnerships between schools, the Department of Rehabilitation (DoR) and employers for the purpose of supporting youth in a successful transition into adult life and employment.

Student to Work – Student to Employee- Home to Independence

  • Students may begin work experience in their junior year of high school.
  • The teacher, TPP Specialist, and Rehabilitation Counselor work together to assess the students’ academic and vocational strengths, job skills and interests.
  • The team becomes familiar with each employer’s business needs and the skills necessary for success on the job. Every effort is made to make a successful match between employers and potential employee.
  • Once a student is placed on a job, support for both the employer and student is provided.
  • On-the-job training incentives and tax credits are available when appropriate.

Mayacama Employment Service

Mayacama Industries is a non-profit agency serving people with disabilities in Willits and Ukiah. Mayacama provided work training, job placement and support services enabling people to maximize their work skills, habits and earnings. Referrals are accepted from individuals and private or public agencies.

  • Individuals 16 years or older who want competitive jobs
  • Vocationally handicapped with a diagnosed disability
  • Mobile
  • Able to care for personal needs (i.e., eat, take medications, use rest room)
  • Not harmful to self or others

L.I.F.E Services (Life Independence from Experience)

The purpose of L.I.F.E is to connect individuals served with their community in order for them to earn an income, explore personal interests and take care of every day business.

Redwood Community Services

Redwood Community Services (RCS) Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Action (WIOA) Title I Youth Program provides services to out-of-school youth ages 16-24 years old. The WIOA Program assists participants with career exploration and education guidance, preparing them to enter postsecondary education, training and employment based on the goals and needs of each individual. Funded by the Workforce Development Board of Mendocino County.

Program Elements include: Personal development and support; Basic Literacy Skills Assessment and Tutoring; Community Referrals and Resources; Employment Workshops; Work Experience and On-the-Job Training; Financial Literacy Workshops; Supportive Services; and Follow-up Services.

Eligibility– Must be an Out-of-School Youth, 16-24 years old, AND meet one of the following: School dropout (no longer attending any school and have not received a secondary school diploma or recognized equivalent); A youth who is within compulsory age of school attendance, but has not attended school for at least the most recent school year calendar quarter; A recipient of a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent who is low-income and is either basic skills deficient or an English language learner; Pregnant or parenting; Homeless, runaway, current/former foster child, or in an out-of-home placement; Offender; An individual with a disability; or A low-income individual who requires additional assistance to enter or complete an education al program or to secure or hold employment.

ABC – No Barriers

No Barriers services are provided to consumers 15-30 hours per week between 8am and 6pm, Monday through Friday. The Regional Center Service Coordinator and the No Barriers program Director may negotiate an individualized plan to provide service outside of these hours and/or outside of the 1/30 hours range. It is expected that consumers will attend the program following the agreed on schedule.

Every consumer receiving services from No Barriers has individualized program outcome goals and as individualized plan. Each plan is based on the principles of positive behavioral support and is designed to provide opportunities for learning new skills, for social inclusion, for access to meaningful activities, and for participation in the local community. Each consumer’s program is implemented in places and social contexts that reflect the individual’s needs and preferences, in both group and individual settings, and with the consumer supported 1:1 or 1:2 by No barriers Support Staff.

  • Serves adults who need a highly individualized, flexible day program and intensive 1:1 or 1:2 support to successfully accomplish their goals.
  • Provides services for people who need specialized support due to behavioral or other serious needs.
  • Is community based.
  • Works with people in places and social contexts that they chose
  • Focuses on increasing social skills, communication skills, self control/management skills, self-advocacy skills.
  • Is based on the principles and practices of Positive Behavior Support and Applied Behavior Analysis

Eligibility requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a consumer of Redwood Coast Regional Center
  • Require a flexible, individualized program to accomplish IPP goals.
  • Not be a serious danger to self or others when in the NO Barriers Program.
  • Individuals with serious medical issues whose support requires specialized training are considered on an individual basis.
  • Live in a home environment capable of supporting successful participation in No Barriers.

ABC – Opportunities Unlimited (OU)

Opportunities Unlimited provides day services to adults who want to participate in community activities and/or work. Program focus is on customized employment with emphasis on supporting individuals in the development of their own individual or group owned small business.

An initial screening assessment will be conducted before the consumer enters Opportunities Unlimited. This information will be used to determine if the consumer meets the entrance criteria and to develop an Initial Support Plan.

Entrance Criteria: People served by Opportunities Unlimited require significant, individualized support to reach their work goals. Suppoet is available at 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 staff to consumer ratios as needed for success in environments and activities chosen by the individual.

Willits Unified School District- Community Learning Center Program

The Community Learning Center facilitates intensive training in life skills and vocational training in the community. Each student’s program is determined by the Individualized Transition Plan that is developed with the student and monitored by the I.E.P. / I.T.P. team. The program encompasses meaningful employment, functional living skills, transportation needs, recreational and leisure activities. It also addresses appropriate living arrangements. Inter-agency collaboration involving Redwood Coast Regional Center, SELPA, Department of Rehabilitation/Transition Partnership, Mendocino College and Willits Unified School District is an integral part of the Community Learning Center Program.

Eligibility requirements for the program include:

  • Students must be eighteen to twenty two years old with a Developmental Disability.
  • The I.E.P. / I.T.P. team must recommend placement.
  • The student must be able to benefit from a work based program, evidenced by previous experiences and skills.
  • The student must be able to safely use public transportation.

Community Transition Program

The Community Transition Program is located in a residential neighborhood in Ukiah. Staff and students use public transportation (MTA) to access a variety of locations in the community for Workability job training, Mendocino College classes, daily living skills in real settings. Each student’s program is determined by the student and his/her team and Self-Advocacy and Self-Determination skills and emphasized as basic components.

  • Student must be 18-22 years old with an intellectual disability
  • The IEP team must recommend placement
  • The student must be able to benefit from a work based program, evidenced by previous experience
  • The student must be able to safely use public transportation

LCOE – Workability

Mission: The mission of WAI is to promote the involvement of key stakeholders including students, families, educators, employers and other agencies in planning and implementing an array of services that will culminate in successful student transition to employment, lifelong learning and quality of life.

WorkAbility I program services are available to all high school students in Lake County who have a current IEP. Students from all districts, including Konocti, Kelseyville, Lakeport, Middletown, Lake County Office of Education and Upper Lake are participating in the program. Services are all based on the Array of Service guidelines provided by the California Department of Education (CDE) and include work based, school based and community based activities. WorkAbility provides curriculum, pre-employment skills training and direct worksite training for the students in the program. Currently, the Lake County WorkAbility program serves 326 high school students.

Qualifying Criteria: Students in WorkAbility must have a current IEP and be in high school level. Lake County is funded to serve 325 students and must place 81 of those students in paid work.
